Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed combating deepfakes with personalized security questions for authentication to ensure the safety of user funds.

Buterin said the rise in deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a serious problem in digital communications. Fraudsters fake audio and video, generating the voice and image of the desired person. Particular risk arises when verifying people's identities during video calls or transactions, making it difficult to distinguish between a real person and a fake. To counter this threat, Buterin proposed an innovative solution.

Buterin's approach is to create personalized security questions to provide a strong authentication mechanism as traditional security verification methods become ineffective. According to Buterin, cryptographic signatures have their limitations. They will not help in situations where the key may be compromised, or if it is being forced to authorize a transaction. Therefore, control questions will eliminate these shortcomings. These questions should be tailored based on the experience and knowledge of specific people, so it will be difficult for an outsider to give the correct answer.

According to Buterin, the advantage of this method is that it relies on human memory and personal relationships - something that artificial intelligence loses. By using personal details that are known only to a small circle of people and that cannot be found on the Internet, these security questions can provide strong protection against identity theft and fraud, Buterin says.

You can also increase the difficulty level of questions by adding specifics. These include pre-agreed code words, duress signals, multi-channel confirmation of important transactions, and deliberate delays in important actions.

Recently, Buterin urged developers to be more careful when introducing AI systems into blockchain-based projects, as this increases the risk of various errors. In December, the co-founder of Ethereum even expressed fears that artificial intelligence could rebel against humanity.
